Free electron definition

Free electrons are electrons that are not confined within an atom. Such electrons can move in substances or in vacuum when they are subjected to external electric or magnetic fields. For example, atoms are combined into metal crystals mainly by the valence electrons in the outer layer of atoms and part of the inner electrons. Under normal circumstances, certain valence electrons can break away from atoms and move freely in the crystal lattice. Such electrons are called free electrons.
